FAQ

Quick answers. Find answers to common questions about working with Canada Music Group, from submitting music to royalties and careers.

General

What is Canada Music Group?

Canada Music Group (CMG) is a music company built around artists and songwriters. We bring records, distribution and publishing under one roof. You can read more on our About page.

What are CMG’s three divisions?

CMG Records signs and develops artists. CMG Distribution delivers music to streaming platforms and stores. CMG Publishing looks after songs and songwriters. See What we do for details.

Who can work with CMG?

We work with emerging and established artists and songwriters alike. What matters most is the quality of the music and the commitment behind it.

How do I get in touch?

Use our contact page, choose the topic that fits best and send us your message.

Artists

How do I submit my music?

Use the form on our contact page to send a short introduction and links to your best two or three tracks. Tell us about your goals and where you are in your career.

Is there a fee to send music?

No. Sending music or a message to us is free.

Will you listen to everything?

We review submissions with care and reach out when we feel there is a good fit. We cannot give feedback on every submission, but we appreciate each one.

Will I keep ownership of my music?

That depends on the type of agreement and is discussed individually. Whatever the arrangement, we explain who owns what in plain language before anything is signed, and we encourage you to take independent advice.

Can I stay independent and still work with CMG?

In many cases, yes. Tell us what you want to keep control of and what you would like help with, and we will explain how we could work together.

What genres and languages do you work with?

We are interested in good music in any genre and any language. What matters is the quality of the songs and the originality of the artist.

Songwriters and publishing

What does a music publisher do?

A publisher looks after songs on behalf of songwriters. That includes registering songs, collecting royalties and finding opportunities such as co-writing sessions and sync placements.

Do I need to be a performer to work with CMG Publishing?

No. Many songwriters write for other artists and never perform. Tell us about your catalog and where you would like to go.

What is a split sheet?

A split sheet is a simple document that records who wrote a song and what share each writer owns. Completing one as soon as a song is written prevents disputes and delays later.

What is sync?

Sync, short for synchronisation, is the licensing of music for use with moving images, such as film, television, advertising and games.

How do I register my songs?

Registration requires accurate information such as titles, writers and ownership shares. Our publishing team can help with the process once we are working together.

Distribution Portal

What is the Distribution Portal?

It is the place where you deliver releases to platforms and stores, follow performance and see your royalties. Learn more on the Distribution Portal page.

How do I sign in?

Go to cms.canadamusicgroup.cc and sign in with your account details.

Do I need to be signed to CMG Records to use distribution?

No. Our divisions are designed to work together, but each one can also work on its own. Contact us to discuss what is right for you.

What should I prepare before releasing?

Final, mastered audio in a high-quality format, square artwork in high resolution, the exact spelling of artist names, titles and credits, and confirmation that you control all the rights to the music.

How long does it take for a release to go live?

It depends on review and on each platform, which is why we recommend submitting several weeks before your chosen release date.

Can I change the details of a release after delivery?

Some details can be updated. Contact us if you need a change and we will explain what is possible.

Can I remove a release?

Yes. Please contact us and we will arrange the takedown.

I forgot my password. What should I do?

Use the password reset option on the sign-in page, or contact us if you cannot access your account.

Royalties and payments

How will I know what I am earning?

We provide regular reporting that is designed to be easy to follow. In the portal you can see what has been earned and where it came from.

When do I get paid?

Payments follow the schedule in your agreement and depend on when income is reported to us.

Why does income sometimes appear late?

Platforms and partners report on different schedules, so some activity appears after a delay. This is normal, and our team can explain it if you have questions.

What if a statement looks wrong?

Contact us with the details, including the release title and period, and we will investigate.

Can you give legal or financial advice?

No. We cannot give legal or financial advice by email. If you need advice about a contract, please speak to a qualified professional.
